A Note on Peace

What makes our location extra magical is that despite being in the dead-center of Rome, it is quiet and peaceful. We ask our guests to preserve this sanctuary by keeping noise levels low in the courtyard and common areas.

Where does the name "Regola" come from?

The name Regola is a linguistic evolution of the Latin word "Arenula" (which became Renula in the local dialect). This refers to the rena (fine silt or sand) that the Tiber River deposited along its banks during its frequent floods.

Before the high stone walls (lungotevere) were built in the late 19th century, the neighborhood was physically defined by its relationship to the river. It was a gritty, industrious area filled with tanners and craftsmen who needed the river water for their work. You can still see this history in the street names surrounding the apartment, like Via dei Vaccinari (tanners).

The "Rena" was a constant reminder of the river's power. Today, that name survives not just in the Rione's title, but also in the Church of San Carlo ai Catinari, which is officially known as San Biagio e Carlo ai Catinari in Arenula.
